Info: When Shinta's parents died of cholera, he was sold to slave traders.  The company was attacked by a group of men, but was saved by Hiko Seijurou.  Shinta was the only survivor, and Hiko took Shinta in as his student, renaming him to Kenshin.  Kenshin was taught Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu (In the OVA, Hiko says that the technique will die with Kenshin, but the series has another guy who knows the same technique.  Whatever!)  Anyway, Kenshin eventually leaves Hiko and becomes an assassin for the Ishin Shishi (Chosu).  Along his path he meets up with Yukishiro Tomoe, of whom he falls in love with (and kills her accidentally).  After he helps to bring about the Meiji Era, he swears that he'll never kill again and begins to use a Sakabatou (reversed-blade sword).  He wanders about for ten years until he meets up with Kaoru in Tokyo.
